Paris Hilton claims she ‘started a new genre of celebrity’

BEFORE the Kardashians, there was Paris Hilton and her posse leading the way in reality TV — and the socialite credits herself with paving their way.

ALTHOUGH some might see the current crop of young social media stars as a generation of Snapchat-obsessed celebrity wannabes, Paris Hilton sees “young entrepreneurs and people with dreams”.

The celebutante-turned-global-brand tells Ocean Drive magazine that even though her rise to fame came before the era of the “social-media influencer,” she blazed the way for the entree-Instagramming hordes. “I was definitely before my time, and the beginning of a whole new era, and it started a new generation and genre of celebrity,” she said.

The Hilton hotel heiress — who gained notoriety after the 2004 release of her infamous sex tape, 1 Night in Paris, and became a household name because of her reality show, The Simple Life — said: “I think it was pretty groundbreaking, and I love being a pioneer.”

In Ocean Drive’s December issue, Hilton also said: “I’m very proud I started a whole new way for young people, young entrepreneurs and people with dreams to make a living and a very lucrative business off of it.” But, she also admits that “being a businesswoman, I would’ve loved to capitalise on it”.

Hilton was so ahead of the curve, she even introduced the world to Kim Kardashian back in 2006 when Kim was just her sidekick and closet organiser.

Earlier this month, the star claimed to have “invented the selfie” during a night out with Britney Spears in 2006.

Hilton is currently in Australia promoting her new perfume, Rose Rush.
