Meet the Top New York City Mayoral Candidates

Ranked-choice voting will decide the winner of the June 22 primary

Voters will soon pick the next mayor of New York City, and they have many choices on their ballots.

The mayoral primary is June 22, with early voting beginning Saturday. It is the first time ranked-choice voting will be used in a citywide race. Voters can list their top five candidates in preferential order. In all there are 13 candidates on the ballot in the Democratic primary, making it the largest field of mayoral contenders in the city’s history.

The winner of the Democratic primary is likely to be the next mayor, as Democrats vastly outnumber Republicans in the city. Mayor Bill de Blasio, a Democrat, is term-limited and will leave office at the end of the year.

Here is a look at the top eight candidates running to lead the nation’s largest city:

Eric Adams

Platform: The Brooklyn borough president and a former New York Police Department officer, 60 years old, has focused on public safety, one of the most important issues of his campaign. It has resonated with voters as some crimes have increased across New York City.
