The golf legend was extricated from the wreck and taken into surgery after the accident in which he suffered leg injuries. Officials said there was no sign of impairment.

Golf legend Tiger Woods underwent surgery Tuesday after a rollover accident near Los Angeles left him with serious injuries to both legs and required him to be extricated by firefighters and paramedics.

Woods wasn’t able to stand under his own power before he was taken into surgery at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, the nearest trauma center, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office said.

According to a statement posted on Woods’s Twitter account late Tuesday, he was awake, responsive and recovering in his hospital room.

Sheriff Alex Villanueva earlier said there was no immediate sign of impairment. No attempt to draw blood from Woods was made at the scene. Villanueva said that his condition and signs of being under the influence of narcotics, alcohol or medicine would be the subject of an investigation.

Woods was driving down a curvy hill in an area where police said accidents are common. The car traveled several hundred feet, indicating the car was traveling faster than normal. The car hit the center median and then a tree before flipping multiple times and settling in brush. Authorities said that wearing a seatbelt might have saved Woods’s life.
