Pregnant Woman’s ‘April the Giraffe’ Stunt Goes Viral

March 7, 2017 at 14:49

Millions of people have tuned into the live stream of April the Giraffe preparing for labor. Now a pregnant mom’s parody of the animal has gone viral.

On Sunday night, Erin Dietrich, a mom of three and a photographer, launched a Facebook live stream from her bedroom in South Carolina. The video, which has racked up 13 million views, almost 160,000 reactions, and 277 shares, features the 39 weeks’ pregnant mom pacing the room wearing a tank top, sweatpants — and an oversize giraffe head. Viewers have remarked that they “can’t stop” watching Dietrich and that her tribute to April the giraffe is “awesome” and “hilarious.”

The video is a nod to April the Giraffe, a 15-year-old at the Animal Adventure Park in Harpursville, N.Y., who is already a mother to three calves. In the beginning of March, the park began live-streaming the giraffe ending her 15-month pregnancy and preparing for birth in her enclosure. Since then, April has become quite the Internet star — 15 million people have followed the giraffe’s journey, the park has launched a merchandise line for April fans, and one man in Seattle built an “active delivery” app called Giraffe Watch, which sends users an email when April shows signs of progress.

April is a bit of a cougar because her baby daddy, Oliver, is only 5 years old and this is his first time being a father and having a baby,” according to the park’s YouTube page. When April’s calf is born, he or she will weigh 150 pounds, stand 6 feet tall, and will be able to walk after 10 minutes and run after half an hour.

Dietrich did not return Yahoo Beauty’s request for an interview, but she admits to being “obsessed” with April in the comments section of the video. Dietrich wrote: “All our friends have been making fun of me and my obsession with April so we just thought, ‘Hey, we should order a giraffe mask.'” She added: “Clearly we live an exciting life over here in the Dietrich household.”

With Dietrich and April neck-and-neck in their pregnancy journey, it’s only a matter of time as to who will give birth first. Either way, we can’t for the birth announcements.
