At least three explosions were heard in Zimbabwe's capital early Wednesday and military vehicles were seen in the streets after the army commander threatened to "step in" to calm political tensions over President Robert Mugabe's possible successor.

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe fired Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday, the government said, as the battle between Mnangagwa and Mugabe's wife Grace to succeed the veteran leader intensified.

Zimbabwe is about to start using its own version of the U.S. dollar.

Several people have been beaten by police and at least one of the protesters sustained deep cuts on the head.

Prisons are congested and running low on food and uniforms in the troubled African nation.

The Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority, known as Zimparks, said that “in light of the drought… [the Authority] intends to destock its park estates through selling some of the wildlife,” in a statement reported by Reuters on Tuesday.
