Bernie Sanders wants DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz to resign after leaked emails suggest party officials were mocking the Vermont Senator. Time

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz will not gavel in the start of the national convention in Philadelphia on Monday, according to a party official.

The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly, said that while she remains chairwoman of the DNC, the Florida congresswoman will no longer play the ceremonial role she had been scheduled to carry out.

Ohio Rep. Marcia Fudge, D-Ohio, will preside over the four-day convention.

The decision follows an uproar over emails released by Wikileaks that revealed efforts were discussed by party officials to seemingly undermine the candidacy of Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, the runner-up for the Democratic nomination to Hillary Clinton.

The leaked emails included one where Wasserman Schultz referred to a top Sanders campaign aide as a “damn liar” and another where a party official suggested the Vermont senator’s religious beliefs should be questioned.

Sanders has previously asked for the resignation of Wasserman Schutz from the Democratic National Committee and reiterated that call Sunday.

"I think she should resign, period,” the Vermont senator told ABC's This Week.

CNN previously reported that Wasserman Schultz, a Florida congresswoman, will not speak at this week’s convention in Philadelphia,

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus spoke at the Republican convention last week.
