    Constance Wu Clarifies Fresh Off the Boat Renewal Tweets: “I Was Temporarily Upset”

    The ABC star issued a heartfelt explanation of tweets that seemingly condemned the series, claiming the renewal cost her a passion project.

    Fresh Off the Boat will return for a sixth season on ABC, which ordinarily might be considered good news. Series lead Constance Wu, on the other hand, wasn’t initially thrilled when the renewal was announced Friday evening. In a series of tweets shortly after the the news broke Wu wrote “So upset right now that I’m literally crying.” On Saturday the actress has posted a lengthy update, revealing that the renewal created a scheduling conflict with another project that “would have challenged me as an artist.” She continued, “People ‘assumed’ that meant I don’t love and enjoy FOTB. But I do love and enjoy it. I hope you believe me.”

    The commotion started Friday night with ABC’s official announcement of Fresh Off the Boat’s renewal for a sixth season, after which Wu let fly with a series of seemingly disappointed tweets. “Fucking hell,” she wrote, later responding to a fan’s description of the renewal as good news with “No it’s not.”
     

       

    According to Deadline, Wu even responded to the Fresh Off the Boat Instagram announcement with a “dislike,” before deleting the comment. The apparent outburst naturally made headlines, leading Wu to follow up claiming her words were taken out of context.

     
    “Todays tweets were on the heels of rough day&were ill timed w/the news of the show,” she initially explained. “Plz know, Im so grateful for FOTB renewal. I love the cast&crew. Im proud to be a part of it. For all the fans support, thank u & for all who support my casual use of the word fuck-thank u too.” On Saturday morning, Wu followed up with a longer explanation that the renewal forced her to bow out of “another project that I was really passionate about.”
     
    Wu has starred in the ABC series based on chef Eddie Huang’s memoirs since 2015. Her star rose considerably with the breakout success of last year’s Crazy Rich Asians, which earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical. She will also be seen in the upcoming stripper thriller Hustlers, alongside Jennifer Lopez and Cardi B. Asians will also spawn sequels based on Kevin Kwan’s novels China Rich Girlfriend and Rich People Problems—both said to film in 2020—which could further complicate Wu’s shooting schedule with Fresh Off the Boat.
